B.Tech – Biotechnology
Overview
Biotechnology is the science and technology based on life science. Biotechnology connects cellular and molecular processes to develop technologies and products that help to improve quality of life. Recent advances in biotechnology helps in developing tools and technologies to combat deadly diseases, to keep the environment healthier and to have efficient industrial manufacturing processes.
School of Life Sciences, B. S. Abdur Rahman Institute is offering B. Tech. in Biotechnology commencing from 2014. The course will train the students in theory and laboratory techniques of national and international importance. The program provides a firm foundation in the principles underlying modern biotechnology techniques, and integrates this theoretical understanding with intensive training in a variety of laboratory skills and in computer applications to biotechnology.
All the mentors and the faculties in the School are highly competent and committed with specializations in diverse fields of genetics, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, bioinformatics etc. All the faculty members are trained in universities and research laboratories of international and national excellence. All of them intend to conduct high quality research along with classroom teaching. Seminars, conferences and workshops at local, national and international levels will be organized to expose the students to the global trends in biotechnology.
Objectives
- To convey better knowledge among the students about modern day biotechnology
- To ensure better quality of education by continuous monitoring and review of performance and counseling students.
- To achieve excellent pass percentage in the semester examination.
- To enhance problem-solving skills of students through industry oriented projects applying state-of -art techniques.
- To supplement the academic input of students by way of seminars, conferences, guest lectures and industrial visits.
- To strive constantly so as to improve the quality of the faculty members through up-gradation of qualification, participation in, and conduction of short term training programs, seminars and workshops, and publications of papers, books etc.
- To provide industrial exposure to the faculty members by undertaking sponsored research, consultancy work and organizing industry oriented training programs at various levels.
Scope
Employment record shows that biotechnology has a great scope in future. Bio-technologists can find careers with pharmaceutical companies, chemical, agriculture and allied industries. They can be employed in the areas of planning, production and management of bio-processing industries. As there is increasing popularity and explosive growth, there are plenty of opportunities available in Biotechnology field.
B.Sc. Biotechnology
Programme Educational Objectives
- This course will facilitate the graduates to be professionally competent in Biotechnology to solve the problems in agricultural, environmental, food, biochemical and biomedical sciences.
- This course will offer students with a solid foundation in biological sciences, to enable them to work on applications in biotechnology as per the requirement of the industries, and also will enable the students to pursue higher studies and research.
- This course will enable students to acquire knowledge on the fundamentals of Biochemistry, Cell biology, Microbiology and Molecular biology to enable them to understand basic concepts in modern biology and help them to build their carrier in related fields.
- This course will facilitate the students to acquire knowledge in skill based courses such as Biofertilizer Technology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Herbal Technology, Disease Management and Mushroom Culture Technology enabling their skills and enhance confidence to them to venture into business opportunities.
- This programme will teach students the importance of Bioethics, entrepreneurship, communication and management skills.
- This course will also offer the graduates to demonstrate their proficiency in theory and practice of bio-techniques through lifelong learning and provide confidence to perform as an individual and / or member of a team with professional and ethical behaviour.

- Graduates of the course will have strong background in the interface of modern biology and skill based courses and are able to use these tools in business/industry and/or institutes wherever necessary.
- Graduates will identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex science problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural science, and applied sciences.

- Acquire information on the basics of biotechnology for comprehensive and compact base which enables them to understand the emerging concepts in life sciences.
- Acquire Information on various domains of advanced biotechnology and their applications and research.
- Students will acquire techniques of Biotechnology that will help to interact with multi-disciplinary aspects of Biotechnology
- Students acquire key areas such as Patent drafting and application, Artificial Intelligence in diagnostic Medicine and precision agriculture, Bioentrepreneurship, Computer aided Drug Design, Regenerative Medicine, Biomass and Bioenergy will help to meet the necessities of Indian and international Biotech industries.
M. Tech. Food Biotechnology
Programme Educational Objectives
- To deliver advanced food biotechnology knowledge and capabilities
- To educate the necessary skillsets for food production and manufacturing in accordance with industry needs.
- To instill confidence and provide the required environment for basic and practical research in food biotechnology-related fields with societal significance.

Programme Outcomes
On successful completion of the programme, the graduates will be able to
- Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
- Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyses complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

M.Tech. Biotechnology
Programme Educational Objectives
The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the core principles and topics of Biotechnology and their experimental basis, and to enable students to acquire a specialized knowledge and understanding of selected aspects by means of a lecture series and a research project.
Hence, the main objectives of the program are:
- To provide an introduction to the basic concepts of Biotechnology and its recent advances
- For the basic understanding, this course includes advanced biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, immunotechnology, and microbial biotechnology
- Moreover, several laboratory courses given in the individual sections of the curriculum with detailed information on the importance of biotechnology in basic and applied research.
- Finally this course explains the advanced sections of biotechnology like genetic engineering, nanobiotechnology, computational biology and medical biotechnology.
- This course provides necessary theoretical and practical experience in all divisions of biotechnology to pursue a professional career in this field.
- To provide broad exposure to various societal, ethical and commercial issues in the various aspects of biotechnology.

The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the core principles and topics of Modern day Biotechnology, and to enable students to acquire a specialized knowledge and understanding of selected aspects by means of a lecture series and a research project.
Hence, the main objectives of the program are
- To provide strong fundamentals of biotechnology and its industrial application.
- To discover in depth knowledge of animal and plant biotechnology, and also broad area of biochemistry, Immunology and molecular biology
- It will provide the students to develop independent learning skills all biochemical and biotechnology studies.
- This course will provide the students to apply their knowledge and skills in their future professional areas.

M.Sc. Microbiology
Programme Educational Objectives
The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the core principles and topics of Microbiology and their experimental basis to enable students in acquiring a specialized knowledge by means of dedicated lecture series and subject-oriented research project.
Hence, the main objectives of the program are:
- To communicate the basic knowledge in general microbiology with detailed subdivision of microbiology
- For the basic understanding this course includes microbial biochemistry, physiology and molecular Biology to give basic understanding of the microbiology
- Further bacteriology, virology, mycology give individual sections of microbiology with detailed information on economic importance of microbiology
- Finally this course explains the advanced sections of microbiology like Immunology, Microbial genetics, food microbiology, medical microbiology, Environmental microbiology, industrial microbiology and bioinformatics
- This course provides necessary theoretical and practical experience in all divisions of microbiology to become an effective professional.
