  • Inauguration of National Science Fair 2024

    Published on January 20, 2024

The National Science Fair 2024 (NSF ’24) with the Display of Research Based Projects by School Students was held on 20th and 21st of January 2024 at BSACIST, jointly organized by B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology and Organization of Muslim Educational Institutions and Associations of Tamilnadu.

The Chief Guest of Inauguaral Function Hon’ble K.S. Gingee Masthan, Minister for Minority Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare, Govt. of Tamilnadu inaugurated the Science Fair at 10 am on 20th January, 2024’. Mr. K. Radhakrishnan, Scientist/ Engineer G and Head (Rtd), Vikram Sarabai Centre, ISRO, Chennai is the Guest of Honour. Mrs. M. Asia Marium I A S, Director of Minority Welfare, Govt. of Tamilnadu delivered valedictory address & presented awards and prizes. Dr. N. Thajuddin, Pro Vice-Chancellor, B.S.A. Rahman Crescent IST preceded the event as the Guest of Honour.

It is a display of Research Based Projects. It is not a Science Exhibition just to display the exhibits or models. Science Projects are carried out following scientific methodology of conducting experiment, collection of data and its interpretation to arrive at results, are presented. Students displayed Research Papers of their projects in the science fair. One of the objectives of science education is to develop inventiveness and creativity along with competence. Science education in India at its best develops competence, but does not encourage inventiveness and creativity. This is evident from the fact that many Indian students perform very well in formal / scholastic tests, but relatively few make it to the grade of truly outstanding researchers or original thinkers. An average science student in the country demonstrates neither inventiveness nor competence in science. Curricular transaction alone is not sufficient to provide scope for inventiveness and creativity. This is particularly so in our education system, dominated as it is by the examination system. It is in this context that non-formal modes of learning assume great significance. Mostly, all over India, Science Exhibitions are prominent science related activity. But, in the science exhibitions, students display only models, although some of these are also based innovative and creative ideas. Mostly, exhibits are not original and are science experiments from text books. There is no scope for students to observe and think and also curiosity does not play any role. In Science Fairs, students display the reports of Research Based Science Projects done following the scientific methodology. Science Fair projects are original and publishable. Science Fairs are rare events in India, but it is very common in advanced countries.

    Published on April 18, 2022
L to R: Dr.R.Jayashree, HOD-Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Dr.M.S.Haji Sheik Mohammed, Dean-Academics, Dr.A.Azad, Registrar, Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, Professor, IIT – Bombay, Dr. N.Raja Hussain, Additional Registrar, Dr.D.Najumnissa Jamal, Dean-School of Electrical and Communication Sciences, Dr.S.Rasool Mohideen, Dean-School of Mechanical Sciences, B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai

Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, Professor at IIT, Bombay visited B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology Campus, Chennai on his 11-year-long Yatra on 18.04.22 and conducted a workshop on “CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY SWARAJ AND I”.

In the context of Energy Access, Energy Sustainability and Climate Change, Prof. Chetan S Solanki have coined the term Energy Swaraj . He works in establishing Energy Swaraj or providing localised solar energy solutions across the globe by developing solar PV technologies and products, developing and conducting training on solar PV technologies and products, planning and executing large scale projects, particularly in the off-grid energy sector, monitoring the impact and conducting research. He is also interacting with policy makers and providing inputs in policy making. He has been recently conferred with the title of Brand Ambassador of Solar Energy for Govt. of Madhya Pradesh.

During his yatra, which began in November 2020 from Mumbai, he has been creating a public movement towards 100% adoption of solar energy. The ‘solar bus’ reached Chennai after covering 18,000 km across nine states. Prof. Solanki’s ‘mobile home’ is equipped with 3.2 kW solar panels and 6 kWh of battery storage. It also has a 3 kVA inverter. The bus runs on diesel, but all lights, cooler, cookstove, and other appliances inside it are solar-powered.

For switching fully to solar energy, Prof. Solanki advises a three-step approach—’Avoid, Minimise and Generate’. “Avoid use of energy as much as possible even if it is solar energy. If you can’t avoid the use of energy, minimise its use through use of efficient appliances. And, generate energy locally. Energy Swaraj is about distributed production, and its Energy by Locals for Locals” he said. Prof. Solanki undertook the Energy Swaraj Yatra after an international trip convinced him that very little was being done constructively to mitigate global warming. But for ‘Energy Swaraj’ to succeed, government action alone would not suffice, he said. Underscoring the importance of energy literacy, he said individuals and institutions would have vital roles in it.
