Poster for Disaster Preparedness Awareness Program
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department, Chengalpattu District and B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology (Crescent Institute), jointly organized a “Disaster Preparedness Awareness Program” with a focus on inclusive education, safety culture, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program engaged a broad spectrum of stakeholders—students, faculty, non-teaching staff, technical staff, administrative staff, hostel workers, and the general public—demonstrating practical fire safety measures, the handling of household liquids and gases, and the use of multiple fire extinguishers for different fire scenarios (oil, electricity, and dry materials). A key objective was to foster a culture of prevention, readiness, and responsible action across the campus and surrounding community, reinforcing Crescent Institute’s commitment to education for all and aligning with Sustainable Development Goals, which emphasizes equitable access to educational resources.
The program was organized on the college grounds (Playground) to provide an accessible, interactive, and large-scale demonstration that could accommodate varied audiences, including non-students and community members. Engaging Third Year Engineering students pursuing Disaster Management provided a direct link between academic learning and practical, situational awareness, enabling experiential learning that complements theoretical coursework. The initiative demonstrates Crescent Institute’s dedication to safety culture and social responsibility, extending education beyond traditional learners to the broader community.
Key Objectives
• To enhance fire safety awareness among all campus stakeholders and nearby residents.
• To demonstrate practical fire prevention and emergency response techniques, including household hazardous material handling and the use of different types of fire extinguishers.
• To promote proactive and coordinated responses to fire incidents, reducing risk and potential harm.
• To embed the value of inclusive education by providing open access to educational resources and safety training materials, aligning with SDG targets for inclusive and equitable education.
Program Design and Implementation
