Target 2050 – Carbon Reduction
CLIMATE ACTION PLAN (2024-2050) FOR B.S. ABDUR RAHMAN CRESCENT INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
Goal: Achieve net-zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2050 through phased decarbonisation, aligned with global climate targets.
1.BASELINE EMISSIONS (2024)
• Total Scope 1 + 2 Emissions: 3,425.97 tCO₂e/year
o Scope 1 (DG sets): 77.65 tCO₂e
o Scope 2 (electricity): 3,348.32 tCO₂e
• Current Mitigation: 385 tCO₂e/year saved via Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).
2. PHASED REDUCTION ROADMAP
Phase | Timeline | Key Actions | Target Reduction |
Phase 1 | 2024–2030 | – Replace DG sets with biodiesel hybrids + battery storage. | 20% reduction (685 tCO₂e) |
(Short-Term) | – Expand solar capacity to 1 MWp (from 650 kWp).
– Mandate LED lighting + BLDC fans campus-wide.
Phase 2 | 2031–2040 | – Transition to 100% renewable electricity (PPAs + onsite solar/wind). | 50% reduction (1,713 tCO₂e) |
(Mid-Term) | – Electrify transport (e-buses, EV charging stations).
– Install smart energy meters for real-time monitoring.
Phase 3 | 2041–2050 | – Achieve net-zero Scope 2 via offsite renewables + carbon credits. | 100% reduction |
(Long-Term) | – Offset residual Scope 1 emissions through afforestation projects. |
3. KEY PROJECTS
• Renewable Energy:
o Solar expansion to 2 MWp by 2030, 5 MWp by 2040.
o Explore wind energy partnerships for 24/7 clean power.
• Energy Efficiency:
o Retrofit all buildings to ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) standards.
o AI-driven HVAC optimization to cut cooling emissions by 30%.
• Carbon Offsetting:
o Plant 5,000 native trees/year on campus (est. 250 tCO₂e/year sequestration).
4. GOVERNANCE & MONITORING
• Climate Task Force: Cross-departmental team to track progress biannually.
• Transparency: Publish annual Sustainability Report with GHG inventory.
• Funding: Allocate 5% of operational budget to decarbonization projects.
5. EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Year | Cumulative Reduction | Remaining Emissions | Milestone |
2030 | 685 tCO₂e | 2,740 tCO₂e | Solar meets 40% of electricity demand. |
2040 | 1,713 tCO₂e | 1,713 tCO₂e | 100% renewable electricity achieved. |
2050 | 3,425 tCO₂e | Net-Zero | Residual offsets via carbon credits. |
