Advancing Community Health: B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology’s Commitment to SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being

B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology has taken significant strides towards promoting Good Health and Well-Being, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3). Through initiatives such as the “Say No to Drugs” awareness program, the institute has actively engaged students and the community in discussions about the dangers of drug abuse, fostering a culture of health consciousness. The involvement of law enforcement officials and university leadership in these programs highlights the collaborative effort required to combat substance abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle. Additionally, the mandatory pledge-taking and social media engagement further reinforce the commitment to a healthier community.

Moreover, the institute’s organization of a Blood Donation Camp and a Cancer Awareness Programme illustrates its dedication to addressing critical health issues. By partnering with organizations like the Youth Red Cross and Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau, the university not only facilitated the donation of nearly 100 blood units but also educated local women about cancer prevention and treatment. These initiatives exemplify the institute’s holistic approach to health promotion, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and education in achieving better health outcomes. Through these efforts, B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology is making a meaningful contribution to the well-being of its students and the broader community, embodying the essence of SDG 3.

A. “Say No to Drugs” Awareness Programme
Event Overview

On February 23, 2023, B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology hosted an impactful awareness program titled “Say No to Drugs” at the university’s Convention Centre. This initiative aimed to sensitize students and the community about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a cleaner, healthier lifestyle.

Program Highlights

The program commenced with the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. T. Murugesan, delivering the presidential address. He emphasized the significance of collective efforts in combating drug addiction and the role of educational institutions in shaping a drug-free future. Dr. N. Raja Hussain, the registrar, welcomed the dignitaries and participants, underscoring the importance of awareness in fostering a supportive learning environment.

The event featured esteemed chief guests, including:

  • A. Amalraji, IPS: The Commissioner of Police for Tambaram City, who shared insights into the increasing drug-related issues in urban areas, emphasizing the necessity for proactive measures.
  • Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, IPS: ADGP/Enforcement Bureau, CID, who discussed the government’s standpoint on drug enforcement and the importance of community vigilance in counteracting drug abuse.
  • Pa. Moorthy, IPS: Joint Commissioner of Police, who stressed on law enforcement strategies that empower youth and encourage a drug-free lifestyle.

Dr. Ayub Khan Dawood, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Coordinator, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, reiterating the collective responsibility of everyone in fostering a culture that dissuades drug use.

 Impact and Importance

The “Say No to Drugs” program not only enlightened attendees about the perils of drug abuse but also empowered them to take a stand against it. By involving law enforcement officials and university leadership, the event created a platform for constructive dialogue and community engagement.

Through such initiatives, B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology demonstrates its dedication to promoting not just academic excellence but also the overall well-being of its students and the larger community. The awareness program significantly contributes to the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by emphasizing a healthy, drug-free lifestyle for the youth.

This commitment to health, safety, and community responsibility continues to shape the institute’s role as a leader in fostering well-rounded individuals prepared to contribute positively to society.

As per the Government’s instructions, all the students have to do the below two steps and it is mandatory for all the attending students.

B. BLOOD DONATION CAMP – A Collaborative Initiative with NSS – BSACIST, Youth Red Cross, NCC, Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau, Children’s Hospital – Egmore, Chennai.

B S Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology, National Service Scheme organized BLOOD DONATION CAMP in association with Youth Red Cross, National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau, Children’s Hospital, Egmore on 17.05.23 at Crescent Medical Centre.

Prof. Dr.T.Murugesan, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dr.N.Raja Hussain, Registrar inaugurated the event. Dr. D.Ayub Khan Dawood, NSS Coordinator introduced about Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau, Children’s Hospital. National Cadet Corp (NCC) team members and BSACIST students actively participated and donated nearly 100 blood units.

C. World Cancer Day 2023 – Cancer Awareness Programme

B S Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology, BSA Crescent Alumini Association, National Service Scheme, BSACIST and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) jointly Organized Cancer Awareness Programme on 7th February 2023 at Panchayat Office, Keerapakkam Village, Kattangkolathur Union. World Cancer Day is observed on February 4th to save millions of lives through education, creating awareness towards prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. Hence, this programme was organized in the Keerpakkam village for the welfare of village women.

NSS Program Officer Dr. C. Srinivasan welcomed the group. The coordinator of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Dr.W.Aisha Banu, emphasized the significance of cancer awareness. The Crescent Alumni Association Coordinator, Dr. Jabeen, Dr. S.M. Shaheedha, Associate Professor/Pharmacy addressed all the women during the presidential address about cancer awareness. She insisted on leading a healthy lifestyle and eating clean foods. NSS Program Officer Mrs. R. Anitha gave the vote of thanks. On behalf of Alumni Association, Sweets and snacks were distributed to all the members who participated in this programme.
